Historical Note

Since Ohio State's founding in 1870, the university has been governed by a Board of Trustees. Members are appointed by the state governor to nine-year terms, and are in charge of making policy decisions overseeing university administration, budgets, academic programs, employment of faculty and staff (including the university president,) awarding of honorary degrees, and tuition rates. Starting in 1989, there have been two student members on the Board of Trustees; they serve two year terms, and are also appointed by the governor, though do not have voting power. As of 2019, the Board consists of 15 voting Ohio residents who serve nine-year terms, two voting student trustees who serve two-year terms, and three non-voting, non-Ohio residents who are charter trustees for three-year terms.
