Historical Note

The three framed prints in this collection depict two 19th British century theaters (Astley's Amphitheatre, Regency Theatre) and a toy theatre for the story "Paul Clifford." In England during the early 19th century, the Licensing Act only allowed plays to be shown in two theaters, to get around this other theaters integrated plays with musical interludes or comic skits, making the Act unworkable because it blurred the boundaries throughout the 1830s until the Licensing Act was dropped in 1843.

William O. Brasmer (1921-2006) taught theatre at Denison University until he retired in 1991 and served as department chairman for many of those years. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts while in England in 1946. Brasmer was Managing Director of the Denison Summer Theatre from 1953 to 1963, and he directed more than 150 productions at Denison including musicals, operettas, and plays.
