Biographical Note

Alexandra Danilova (1904-1997) was born in Russia, where she began studying ballet as a child. She started her ballet career at the Imperial School of Ballet in Saint Petersburg. In 1938, Danilova became a prima ballerina with Serge Denham's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and began touring mainly in the United States. Danilova married Kazimir Kokich, also a dancer with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, on February 14, 1941 in Los Angeles. Their marriage ended in 1942, but Danilova remained a lifelong friend of Kokich, and later his wife, Iva Withers, and their family. Danilova worked with the Ballet Russe until 1951. From 1964 to 1989, she taught ballet at the School of American Ballet in New York City. Danilova was known to many in the ballet community by her nickname, “Choura.”
