Historical Note

Chautauqua is a successor of the lyceum movement and is an adult education and social movement in the United States that started during the late 19th century as a program for training Sunday-school teachers and other church workers. Chautauquas eventually had less religious programming and began to include adult education in the form of lectures, recreation, and popular entertainment including cartooning, comedy, magic, songs, dance, ventriloquism, and hypnotism. Independent chautauquas are performed in permanent structures whereas circuit or tent chautauquas are performed in tents due to their traveling nature. Chautauquas also include speakers, preachers, speeches, and inspirational talks. As of 2021, there are still some chautauquas in operation.

The Windsor Indoor Chautauqua of Marietta, Ohio, was a traveling show starring magician and entertainer Tommy Windsor and his wife, singer and dancer Jeanne Windsor.
