Biographical Note

William Case Kramer (1924-2005) was a student and professor of theater throughout his life. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was married to Elizabeth Boyenton in 1958. As a student Kramer attended the University of Virginia (BA, 1949), Columbia University (MA, 1955), and Ohio State University (PhD, 1974). Granted a fellowship, Kramer studied in Europe while working on his PhD (titled “Gordon Craig: Uber-Director, Major Influences on Craig’s Theory and Practice”). Kramer was an Assistant Professor at Towson University (1955-1961), Associate Professor at Wisconsin State University (1964-1967), and then worked at Ohio State University until the mid-1980s. Additionally, he was an active participant in theater, directing plays and designing sets, through his life. Upon his death, Kramer left a bequest to Ohio State University’s Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute to establish a fellowship in his name to allow graduate students to travel internationally.

Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) was an English actor, director, and set designer. The son of actress Dame Ellen Terry and architect and designer Edward William Godwin, Craig (sometimes known as simply Gordon Craig), innovated set designs and wrote on the theory of directing during the early twentieth century.
