 Historical Note

Toy theatre, also broadly known as juvenile drama, is a form of miniature theatre dating back to the late 18th and early 19th century Europe. They were mass produced replicas of popular plays and often sold as kits at the concession stands of opera houses, playhouses, and vaudeville theatres that were assembled at home. The sets would include stage, scenery, characters, costumes, and abridged versions of scripts. Publishers would send artists to playhouses to record the scenery and costumes of popular productions. The replicas were sold as printed sheets, either in black and white or full color. The sheets would be pasted onto thin cardboard and the characters, sets, and props would be cut out and assembled on the toy stage.

 Scope and Contents

The Toy Theatre Collection consists of materials from various toy theatre publishers from Germany and England, and both individuals and companies, including J.F. Schreiber, Benjamin Pollock, and George Skelt, who later in life adopted the name Conetta. Materials include toy theatre stages, scripts, and chromolithographs of facades, wings, backdrops, and characters. The material dates from circa 1835-1975 and 2009
