Roy Harris (1898-1979) was an American composer. His music could often be defined as Americana, reflecting American themes and manipulating folksongs. Harris married pianist Johana Harris (Beula Duffey) in 1936, and the two collaborated throughout their careers. Harris taught at several universities throughout the United States, including the University of California, Los Angeles; California State University; Princeton University; Cornell University; and Indiana University.
The Roy Harris Collection contains correspondence between Roy and Johana Harris with Aaron Copland, Richard Nixon, Eugene Ormandy, and Virgil Thomson, regarding Roy's work in composition, between 1973-1983; the correspondence of Jerome Lawrence related to Harris' musical composition for the Lawrence and Lee play, "Turn on the Night"; an original, untitled composition with holograph notes from 1967; photographs; biographical materials; promotional brochures and programs; and a 1973 catalog of Harris' work from California State University. The collection also includes business correspondence, newsletters, and administrative materials of The Roy Harris Society from the 1980s. The papers of his wife, Johana Harris, including correspondence, clippings, and brochures related to her career as a concert pianist and music teacher in the 1980s, can also be found in the Roy Harris Collection. Collection materials span 1963 through 1983.
