        <bioghist id="ref113">
            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Marcel Marceau was a French actor and mime active from 1946 until his death in 2007. He studied at Charles Dullin’s School of Dramatic Art in the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre in Paris. Marceau’s career began as part of Jean Louis Barrault’s company in France, but he performed across the world spreading “L’art du silence” (the art of silence).</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Collection on Marcel Marceau consists of items related to Marcel Marceau dating from 1956 to 1992. These items consist of photographs of Marcel Marceau performing in mime both alone and with Jean Louis Barrault, as well as photographs of Marceau in character as Bip posing with colleagues and admirers. Also included is a painting of his performance "Le Petit Cirque" by artist Jacques Noel, a poster for a Chicago performance, and a lithograph of an original drawing by Marceau done for The Goldston Mime Foundation as a fundraiser.</p>
