            <abstract id="ref2" label="Abstract">Lester “Marvelo” Lake (1904-1977) was an American magician from Indiana who performed under the stage name “The Great Marvelo” during 1925-1960. Lake became an associate of Abbot’s Magic Company in Michigan during his career and is credited with inventing or improving over 300 magic tricks. The Lester Lake Magic Collection includes correspondence, business cards, tax return forms, insurance papers, bills, newspaper clippings, programs, tickets, greeting cards, programs, advertisement flyers, caricatures of Lester Lake, and drawings; materials date from 1926-1974.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Lester “Marvelo” Lake (1904-1977) was an American magician from Indiana who performed under the stage name “The Great Marvelo” during 1925-1960. Lake lived in New Trenton, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. He performed and toured throughout United States at different locations such as theatres, circuses, and schools, as well as for soldiers during World War II. Lake produced the first modern guillotine illusion and invented several other magic tricks such as being buried, burned, or boiled “alive,” and he was a regular performer at Forest Park in Dayton, Ohio. Lake became an associate of Abbot’s Magic Company in Michigan during his career and is credited with inventing or improving over 300 magic tricks.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Lester Lake Magic Collection dates from 1926-1974 and includes typed and handwritten correspondence. Correspondents include business associates, friends and family members, Lake's fiance, the American Guild of Variety Artists, and the Society of American Magicians. The collection also includes business cards, tax return forms, insurance papers, bills, newspaper clippings, programs, tickets, greeting cards, programs, advertisement flyers, caricatures of Lester Lake, and drawings. Lester Lake's ID card from serving in the United Service Organizations during World War II and materials related to his performances with them are also included, as well as music by Sid Bryan with lyrics by Lake.</p>
