            <abstract id="ref2" label="Abstract">Walter John “Jack” Buchanan was a Scottish theatre and film star of the 1920s-1950s who made his stage debut in 1912. His most famous role in musical comedy was 
                <emph render="italic">The Band Wagon</emph>, with fellow film stars Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. Buchanan made several films in Hollywood circa 1930. The Jack Buchanan Papers contain contracts and correspondence between Jack Buchanan, Susan Buchanan, and Jack's attorneys, agents, friends and others connected to film and television productions. Subjects of the materials include commission and royalty payments, court appearances, employment by agencies, agreements to appear in productions, schedule changes, and other topics related to various film and television productions. The collection is dated 1948-1957.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Walter John “Jack” Buchanan (1891-1957) was a Scottish theatre and film star of the 1920s-1950s who made his stage debut in 1912. He was extremely popular in Britain, and was often called “England’s Fred Astaire” by the press. His most famous role in musical comedy was 
                <emph render="italic">The Band Wagon</emph>, with fellow film stars Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. He was also widely considered a fashion icon in both New York and London, with items such as ties, waistcoats, scarves, liquor, and automobiles using his name and reputation to advertise their goods. Buchanan made several films in Hollywood circa 1930, but began to dance less in films he appeared in as health problems made it increasingly difficult to perform. He married Susan Bassett in 1947, with whom he remained until his death 10 years later in 1957.</p>
