The Eileen Heckart Drama for Seniors Competition was hosted by the Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute on a biennial basis from 2003-2009. The competition was run by Alan Woods, then a professor in the Ohio State University's (OSU) Department of Theatre. Submissions were scripts that dealt with the subject of people aged 55 and older and their life issues; many of the playwrights were also over age 55. Scripts fell into one of three categories: 10-minute plays, one-act plays, and full-length plays. Winners of each category received a cash prize and a staged reading of their play at OSU.
The Eileen Heckart Drama for Seniors Competition Records contains scripts submitted as entries in the competition from 2003-2009, along with videos and photographs from the staged readings of selected winning scripts, and a soundtrack submitted with one of the scripts. Materials in this collection date from 1994-2010, which reflect the dates of copyright or dates of creation of scripts or performances.
