Biographical Note

Akiva Pour-El (1925-2009) was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. He met his wife Marian at the University of California, Berkeley while he was pursuing his doctorate in biochemistry. The couple had one daughter, Ina. Pour-El primarily worked as a biochemist, but also taught Israeli folk dances regionally in California, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois from the 1950s to the 1970s.

The Akiva Pour-El Israeli Folk Dance Instruction Papers contains dance instructions and notations for Israeli folk dances, lists of dances and songs, indexes for recordings, long-playing records of Israeli dance music, and song lyrics in Hebrew and English. Materials are dated circa 1950s-1980, 1997, and were used by Pour-El while teaching Israeli folk dancing.
