Biographical Note

As of 2026, Susan Hadley is a teacher of contemporary dance technique, composition, music and choreography, repertory and pedagogy. She was a principal dancer with the Mark Morris Dance Group, with whom she performed numerous original roles in works such as L’Allegro, Dido and Aeneus, and Mythologies. She was a member of Senta Driver's company HARRY and she performed with Meredith Monk. As rehearsal director for Mark Morris she worked with Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, with Zivili's premier of The Office, and with the Royal Opera's production of Platee. Her own work has been performed by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Repertory Dance Theatre, American Repertory Ballet, BalletMet Columbus, Ballet Memphis, Ballet Pacifica, The University Dance Company, CATCO, and Drums Downtown.

Hadley served as a faculty member and Chair of the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University for over thirty years.

The Susan Hadley Papers, dated circa 1970s-2016, include promotional materials, photographs, press materials, programs, VHS videocassettes, mini-DV videocassettes, compact discs, DVDs, audiocassettes and reviews related to choreographic works created by Hadley. Across the Field Subseries 1.1 circa 2002-2004 August 25 Scope and Contents

Across the Field is one of the five works Hadley created for BalletMet to celebrate BalletMet's 20th birthday and the state of Ohio's 200th anniversary. It included 57 performers from BalletMet and OSUDance, and featured the OSU Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble. It also explores America's identity as a nation in the face of the Iraq War and advocates for cultural diversity and inclusion in the face of prominent political discourses, often drawn along religious and ethnic lines. Across the Field was performed at the Wexner Center for the Arts on March 14th, 2003. Bluegrass was commissioned by Hubbard Street Dance and it premiered in Chicago, Illionis in 1998. The work portrays a group of friends playing in a field and is set to music by Mark O'Connor, a Nashville, Tennesse fiddler. In addition to being a lighthearted, joyful piece, it also celebrates bluegrass as a form of indigenous American music. Caught in the Middle is a piece of performance art presented by Susan Hadley and Bradley Sowash at Performance Space 122 in New York City, New York. Commissioned by the Repertory Dance Theater, Fin Amours premiered at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in 2003. The piece is composed of nine different duets, each portraying a different aspect of relationships, ranging from intimacy, to conflict, and death. The company has revived the work on various different occasions, including the 2023 Utah Arts Festival. Material in the subseries is dated 2007 December 31-circa 2013 and includes reviews and a DVD.
