Historical Note

"A Memory of Two Mondays" and "A View From the Bridge" are two one-act plays written by American playwright Arthur Miller between 1952 and early 1955. They were initially staged together on Broadway by producer Kermit Bloomgarden at the Coronet Theatre. Both plays were directed by Martin Ritt and used the same cast members; they performed "A Memory of Two Mondays" first, followed by "A View From the Bridge" after a brief intermission. Cast members included Van Heflin, J. Carrol Naish, Jack Warden, and Eileen Heckart. After premeiring on September 29, 1955 the plays ran for 149 performances and closed on February 4, 1956.

"A Memory of Two Mondays" tells the story of workers in a Brooklyn automobile parts warehouse during the Great Depression, and was based on Arthur Miller's own experiences during the early 1930s.

"A View From the Bridge" was originally titled "From Under the Sea;" it tells the story of an Italian-American family and tensions with undocumented immigrants in an Italian-American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in 1950s New York City. Following the Broadway run, Arthur Miller reworked the script into a longer two-act version of the play. The longer version premiered in London in October 1956; it was significantly more successful than the one-act version, and has been adapted for radio, television, movies, and opera, as well as being revived on both Broadway and London's West End multiple times.

Kermit Bloomgarden (1904-1976) was an American theatrical producer; he produced Broadway successses such as "Death of a Salesman" (also by Arthur Miller), "The Diary of Anne Frank," "The Music Man," and "Equus," as well as "A Memory of Two Mondays" and "A View From the Bridge."

Arthur Miller (1915-2005) was an American playwright; some of his most popular plays included "Death of a Salesman," "The Crucible," and "A View From the Bridge." He won several Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his plays, among many other awards.
