 Biographical Note

Tanya Calamoneri is a dancer, choreographer, dance researcher, and dance cultural studies scholar. As of 2024, she is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Dance at Ohio State University. She earned her PhD from Temple University. Her research focuses on somatics and butoh (butō) dance, a Post-WWII avant-garde Japanese movement style that has a unique approach to imagery. In 2022, she published a book on butoh in the United States and Mexico, titled Butoh America.

The Tanya Calomoneri Papers, dated 1977-2018, contain materials received by Tanya Calamoneri that were created or collected by Kinji Hayashi, a butoh (butō) dancer and performer from the San Fransciso Bay Area, California. Included are materials about butoh performances by Hayashi and others, such as Koichi Tamano and the Harupin-Ha dance company, as well as materials about other performing arts in the San Francisco Bay Area during this period. The materials include video and audio recordings, press clippings, programs, photographs, and promotional materials.

Included are materials about butoh performances by Hayashi and others, such as Koichi Tamano and the Harupin-Ha dance company, as well as materials about other performing arts in the San Francisco Bay Area during this period. The materials include video and audio recordings, press clippings, programs, photographs, and promotional materials.

The materials in this accession were purchased at an estate sale after Hayashi’s death by a collaborator of Tanya Calamoneri’s, who contacted her about donating it to an archival repository. Calamoneri received the materials and donated them to the Ohio State University's Theatre Research Institute.
