Historical Note

Margaret Morris (1891-1980) was a dancer, choreographer, educator, artist, and writer born in London, United Kingdom. The Margaret Morris Movement was a dance technique combining dance, exercise, and free movement training developed by Morris. She founded her first school teaching the dance method in St. Martin’s Lane in London in 1910. The first Margaret Morris Movement summer school opened in Devon in 1917. Between 1917 through 1939, more schools and training programs were launched including dance schools in Aberdeen, Cannes, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester, and Paris; annual summer schools in the United Kingdom and France; and Margaret Morris Movement Centres internationally. When World War II began, most of the Margaret Morris Movement schools in the United Kingdom closed with some reopening after the war. Although the Glasgow and London schools closed in 1961, the summer schools have stayed open and classes are still taught through the Margaret Morris Movement International Limited as of 2024.
