<p>Gore Vidal (1925-2012) was an American writer and public figure who wrote novels, essays, plays, and other works. After publishing the novel
<emph render="italic">The City and the Pillar</emph> in 1948, Vidal’s subsequent novels were ignored or not well received by critics. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he gave up writing novels for a time and focused on writing scripts for television, stage, and movies. Several of the scripts he wrote were successful, including
                <emph render="italic">Visit to a Small Planet</emph> and
<emph render="italic">The Best Man</emph>. Vidal resumed writing and publishing novels in the mid-1960s.</p>
