 Historical Note

French theater from the early 19th century to the early 21st century has shifted in style. In the early 19th century the style was classics and tragedies, but by the end of the century Naturalism was predominant. After World War I, avant-garde theater, which was influenced by Dada and Surrealism was increasingly being performed. In the 1920s-1930s theatrical productions were associated with Le Cartel des Quatre, an association of four Parisian directors and their theaters. During the 1950s to early 1960s, the theater of the absurd arose from experimental and avant-garde theater, and these types of productions focused on human existence and the illogical. In 1968, during a period of civil unrest, the concept of collective creation was developed where people work together to create a play rather than only a playwright. As of 2022, French theater continues to use experimentation and political or cultural topics.

 Scope and Contents

The French Theater Collection contains mostly programs for theatrical performances. Also included are a broadside, a script, and a postcard. Materials are dated 1807, 1890-2010. The materials are mostly in French with some English; although some items present are titled in other languages, the content of these items is either French or English.
