Carnival is a Western Christian season that occurs before Lent; usually occurring in February or early March. Carnival involves celebrations such as parades and street parties with elaborate costumes and masks.

The Carnival of Venice began after a military victory in 1162, and became official during the Renaissance. In 1797, the festival was outlawed and the use of masks forbidden. In 1979, the carnival returned after occasional occurrences in the 19th century. As of 2021, it is a yearly festival in Venice, Italy that ends on Mardi Gras.
