 Biographical Note

Twyla Tharp (1941-) is an American choreographer, dancer, and author who uses jazz, pop, and classical music for her work. She founded the Twyla Tharp Dance Company in 1966, which later came to national recognition for Deuce Coupe, a ballet and pop crossover set to the music of the Beach Boys in 1973. Additionally, Tharp helped to choreograph the dances for Hair in 1979, assisted by Rinker and performed by her company including Rawe and Way. Tharp's company merged with the American Ballet Theatre in 1988.

As of 2019, Jeff Friedman is the director of the Dance MFA Program at Rutgers University. After earning his PhD in Dance History and Theory from the University of California Riverside, Friedman worked as a dancer, choreographer, and researcher in San Francisco from 1979 to 2003. Friedman’s research concerns collecting dance history through oral history interviews, and has spanned the dance history of America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

 Scope and Contents

The Jeff Friedman Oral Histories with Twyla Tharp Dance Company Performers contains audio and visual recordings, as well as transcripts of Friedman’s interviews of Tom Rawe, Kenneth Rinker, and Jennifer Way during their time with the Twyla Tharp Dance company. In addition to these interviews, the collection contains performance ephemera specifically related to Kenneth Rinker’s career. The interview portion of the collection dates from 2001 while the material relating to Rinker’s career dates from 1965 through approximately 2001.
