The Prague Quadrennial (PQ) was first held in 1967; it is an international exhibition for theatrical performance, scenography, and theatre architecture that is held every four years in Prague, Czech Republic. Countries from around the world prepare exhibitions in several categories including country or regional exhibitions, or student exhibitions. Since 2003, the PQ exhibitions have included more live performance elements in addition to visual exhibitions featuring photographs, set designs, or other display pieces. As a result of these changes, the PQ in 2023 will be the first to be referred to as a festival, instead of simply an exhibition.
As of 2021, Mark Shanda is the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky, a post he has held since 2017. Prior to this, he had taught at The Ohio State University since 1986; he was a faculty member in the Department of Theatre, and the divisional dean of arts and humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences. Shanda is known for his work in the field of theatre technology, including "Drafting for the Theatre," a textbook used by theatrical programs across the United States. In 1999, he was the technical director for the United States' entry in the PQ.
The Mark Shanda Prague Quadrennial Collection consists of items collected by Shanda over the course of attending the Prague Quadrennial (PQ) in 1999, 2003, and 2007. This collection includes brochures, booklets, exhibit catalogs, and posters from different exhibitors at the PQ that explain their entries into the exhibition. A tourist guide to a town near Prague and other tourist attraction brochures are also included in the collection. Materials in this collection date from 1994 to 2007, with the bulk of materials from 1999, which was the year Shanda was the technical director for the United States' entry in the PQ.
OISTAT's World Congress is often held at the same time as the Prague Quadrennial due to the overlap in membership between the two organizations.
