Věra Bořkovec (1926-2014) was a long time member of Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, Inc. and was also an officer of the society beginning in 1977; she was the first woman to hold the position of Secretary General. In 1945, she began studying English and Persian studies at Charles University. After immigrating to the United States, Bořkovec earned a master of arts in French from Hollins College in 1960. She also earned a master of arts in Russian from American University and her doctorate degree in Russian from Georgetown University. Bořkovec taught in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University where she taught Russian and sometimes Czech, linguistics, literature, and drama. She retired as Associate Professor Emerita. Bořkovec has translated many stories by Arnošt Lustig and also translated other Czech and Russian plays.
The Věra Bořkovec Collection on Czech Theatre contains materials Bořkovec collected pertaining to Czech theatre. Materials in this collection are written in both Czech and English. Czech materiels include scripts, newspapers, a newsletter, correspondence by Milady Horáková, handouts, programs, and a calendar. Materials in English include Český Krumlov information books and guides and a script. Some materials have both Czech and English. Materials are dated circa 1962-2006.
