Biographical Note

Ira Bilowit (1925-2016) was an arts journalist, playwright, producer, and editor from New York City. He was born in New York and studied english and philology at the City College of New York, graduating in 1950. He began working in theatre, eventually becoming a playwright, director, producer, manager, and educator. Bilowit also wrote about and critiqued theatrical productions, films, and television, serving as an arts reviewer and editor of Show Business, contributing editor to Backstage, and editor of the New York Theatre Review. He was the vice president of the New York Drama Guild and a member of the International Association of Theatre Critics as well as the New York Drama Desk Organization. In his capacity as a member of the New York Drama Desk Organization, Bilowit hosted panels and discussions with people from the entertainment industry which became known as Drama Desk Sessions. He also hosted many lunches at Sardi's with his drama desk colleagues where members of the entertainment industry were also invited to dine with them and discuss events happening in the theater community. Bilowit joined the American Theatre Critics Association in 1976 where he helped to organize many conferences in New York City. He remained an active member until his death in 2016.

The collection also contains recordings of conference panels, Drama Desk segments, and American Theatre Critics Association events. The titles of materials are given by the creator of the collection. The collection materials range in date from 1978-1994.
