The Collection on Performing Arts Awards contains mostly clippings as well as other materials related to awards given for theatre and other performing arts. Materials in the collection are dated 1964-2002, with the bulk of materials dated 1988-1993.

Historical Note
The performing arts are a form of arts in which artists use their voices, bodies, or inanimate objects to convey artistic expression. These include theatre, music, dance, and other forms of art performed in front of a live audience. In the first half of the 20th century, arts organizations began presenting awards for achievement in the arts. As of 2018, the oldest worldwide entertainment awards ceremony is the Academy Awards, given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and first presented in 1929. Aspects of the Academy Awards became the basis for other arts awards, including the issuing of multiple awards based on categories of competition, presenting winners with a statue or other trophy, and holding a ceremony where winners are honored. Today there are specialized awards for many aspects of the performing arts and awards that are issued to those working in a specific geographic region. The Helen Hayes Award is a theatre award named for the actress Helen Hayes, which is given to recognize excellence in professional theatre in the Washington, D.C. area.

The Collection on Performing Arts Awards contains mostly clippings as well as some programs and publicity materials related to awards given for theatre and other performing arts, including the Helen Hayes Award. Materials in the collection are dated 1964-2002, with the bulk of materials dated 1988-1993.
