Biographical Note

James Ben Ali Haggin (1882-1951), or Ben Ali Haggin as he was more commonly referred to, was an American portrait painter and theatrical designer. He was the grandson of James Ben Ali Haggin Sr., a wealthy turfman and mining multi-millionaire. Ben Ali Haggin attended several prestigious educational institutions such as the Art Student League in New York and the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany. He returned to America where he began a career as an artist specializing in painting portraits of well-known society ladies and theatrical performers in costume. He also began to paint portraits of thoroughbred racing horses, as his family had strong ties to Lexington, Kentucky's thoroughbred horseracing community. He won the Julius Hallgarten Prize in 1909. By the 1930s, Haggin expanded his artistic resume to include theater design, creating sets for the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, the Ziegfield Follies, and other companies and productions.
