 Biographical Note

As of 2017, Lesley Ferris is an Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of Theatre at The Ohio State University. In addition to teaching, Ferris co-founded Palindrome Productions in London and has directed over 50 theatrical productions, some of which are fringe and alternative theatre. Fringe theatre is theatre that is experimental in style or subject matter, usually take place in small theatres, and originated from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the 1940s. Similar to fringe, alternative theatre gained popularity in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s and consists of theatrical ideas and performances that oppose mainstream ideas and concepts.

 Scope and Contents

The Lesley Ferris Fringe and Alternative Theatre Collection includes programs, posters, articles, publications, videorecordings, scripts, photographs, and promotional ephemera primarily related to British fringe and alternative theater, French alternative theater, American alternative theater, and African American alternative theater. Materials are dated 1972-2018.

Accession No. TRI.2021.0014 includes programs, clippings, newsletters, articles, promotional fliers, postcards, and photographs of theater performances, festivals, exhibitions, and venues. The majority of events and venues are located in the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Also included is a t-shirt for the 1994 Avignon Festival in France, a promotional tin container for the Takarazuka Theater in Tokyo, some scripts and a videorecording on DVD for individual productions, and a few multimedia performance projects on CD-Rom. Materials are mostly in English, but also include some French, Portuguese, and Czech, and are dated from 1972-2018.
