The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a battle fought during the United States Civil War on April 6 and 7, 1862. The fighting took place in southwestern Tennessee to the west of the Tennessee River between Pittsburg Landing and a church named the Shiloh Meeting House. The Confederate army was led by General Albert Sidney Johnston, who died during the battle, leaving General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard in command. The Union armies were led by Major Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell. The Union armies defeated the Confederate army, forcing them to withdraw. By the end of the battle, there were 23,746 men killed, wounded, or missing. At that point, this was the greatest number of casualties during a battle of the Civil War.
