Biographical Note

Eliza Chace Greene (1851-1924) lived in Providence, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of Christopher Albert Greene (1816-1853) and Sarah Anne (Chace) Greene (1818-1904). Eliza had two sisters, Abby Sophia (Greene) Atwater (1844-1935) and Sarah Anna Greene (1846-1847), and two brothers, Christopher Wanton Chace Greene (1848-1862) and William Chace Greene (1852-1928). On October 24, 1871, she married Arnold Buffum Chace (1845-1932) and changed her name to Eliza Greene Chace. Arnold was the son of Samuel Buffington Chace (1800-1870) and Elizabeth Buffum Chace (1806-1899), who were both Quakers and prominent anti-slavery activists. He studied at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he became chancellor in 1907, and was treasurer of the Valley Falls Company, a textile company owned by his family. Eliza and Arnold had four children, Arnold Buffum Chace Junior (1872-1950), Malcolm Greene Chace (1875-1955), Margaret (Daisy) Lily (Chace) Rowland (1876-1954), and Edward Gould Chace (1882-1935).

Greene mostly wrote about her life and family, especially her mother, her sister Abby, her husband Arnold Buffum Chace, and her children, Arnold Buffum Chace Junior, Malcom, and Daisy (Margaret). Some entries include Greene’s current street address. The journal also includes clippings, theater programs, hand copied poetry, and pressed flowers. A few recipes are also included at the end of the journal. The journal spans over 50 years of Greene’s life, but there are many years during which she wrote few or no entries.
