Starting around the beginning of the 16th century, the land that is now known as Central and South America was colonized by Spanish and other European settlers. The land had been populated by indigenous peoples, who lived by hunting and gathering or farming. The European settlers enslaved, forcibly relocated, or otherwise oppressed the indigenous people they encountered.

Christiano Junior (full name José Christiano de Freitas Henriques Júnior) was a photographer who lived and worked in South America. He was born in Portugal in 1832, immigrated to Brazil in 1855, and eventually moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina in the late 1860s. Christiano Junior worked in and owned several photography studios during his career and is known for his portraits of enslaved or emancipated people of African descent in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the 1870s and until his retirement from photography in 1883, he photographed the interior provinces of Argentina. Christiano Junior died in Paraguay in 1902.
