Historical Note

The lithography shop of G. Rouchet was located at 97 rue Vieille du Temple in Paris, France as of approximately 1900, though may have been in operation prior to that date. They were known for specializing in label printing and continued to operate until the late 20th century. The shop printed labels and other items in a variety of areas, both artistic and commerical. These areas included tailor shops, fruit and grocery markets, and ink makers.

Lithography is type of printing process invented in Germany circa 1796. The process involves printing using wax onto a smoothed down stone or metal plate that has been etched with an image or letters. The image is then created on a piece of paper or other type of material when the wax is pressed against the stone. Lithography made it easier to print across a wider area and made color printing easier.
