            <head>Historical Note</head>
<p>Cookbooks are books of cooking directions and recipes with step-by-step directions and lists of ingredients for preparing food. Recipes and cookbooks have been used throughout history, but became more popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, after the invention of the printing press. In 1845, Eliza Acton's
<emph render="italic">Modern Cookery for Private Families</emph> established the modern format for writing recipes with a list of ingredients and suggested cooking times, and was also one of the first books aimed at the domestic cook, rather than a professional or hired chef.</p>
<p>Some of the recipes included in this cookbook suggest the time period and region of the United States in which it was created, such as muscadine wine and Jenny Lind pudding. Muscadine is a variety of grape that is native to the southeastern states of America. Wine began to be produced from the grapes in Florida in the 16th century. Jenny Lind was a Swedish singer who toured the United States in 1850. Her popularity in America resulted in the use of her name as a marketing tactic to sell goods, including baked goods and recipes.</p>
