An unknown French-speaker took a trip to Africa circa 1945-1955, and documented the trip in a scrapbook. The photographs in the scrapbook depict different parts of the traveller's trip including images of daily life from various locations visited, African statues, and modes of travel.

France began to establish colonies in Africa in 1830 after the French seized Algiers. After World War II, anti-colonial movements began to challenge European authority in Africa in order to gain independence. The French constitution of 1946 established the French Union. Under the French Union there were no longer any French colonies; instead, all the territories were combined as a single entity to be governed by a single French state. The colonial areas had representation, but all the power remained in France and the Union ended in 1958.
