Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was a Russian novelist, poet, journalist, and playwright of the Romantic era. Born into Russian nobility in Moscow, Pushkin was recognized for his written work at a young age. He was active in promoting social reform and clashed with the government at various points throughout his life, which included time spent in exile. Pushkin is often credited with laying the foundation for modern styles of Russian literature. While not known as an artist, Pushkin created sketches as a hobby.

Pushkin was known in Russia for his literature, not artistic, achievements, so the drawings were likely done as gifts or a leisure activity. The drawings depict Pushkin's family, friends, and colleagues, and include the date of the original drawing, which range from 1821-1836. The set is marked as being produced in a matchbox factory in the city of Novogorod in Russia. It was created circa 1950s-1960s.
