Historical Note

Labor Day, also called International Workers' Day, Workers' Day, and often referred to as May Day, started being celebrated in the 1880s in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. The day was used to celebrate the efforts of laborers and workers and became a federally recognized holiday in those countries. Workers were and are as of 2018, typically given the day off. Banks, public buildings and educational institutions close.

In Russia, Labor Day celebrations were illegal until 1917 after the February Revolution when Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the Imperial Throne and a provisional demoractically elected Russian Constituent Assembly was installed. The holiday, known as Day of the Internation Solidarity of Workers, became an federally recognized holiday celebrating the Russian laborer with an elaborate parade that marched through Red Square, observed by government officals. As in the United States, workers recieve the day off and public institutions close. The holiday and its parade remained very much the same until in 1992 when the usual march through Red Square became a political demonstration to oust President Boris Yeltsin. Since 1992, the holiday has been renamed Spring and Labor Day. Russian families now celebrate the day with barbeques, spring flowers, and other relaxing activities.
