Historical Note

Fliers ("Flugblaetter") and leaflets were produced by both Axis and Allied forces during World War II, and were dropped from aircraft in order to communicate warnings and spread other information. On May 10, 1942, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave a radio address that contained threats about future British bombing attacks on the German Homefront. Churchill specifically mentioned previous Allied successes like Lübeck and Rostock, both of which were bombed during 1942. According to Churchill, the actions of the British had been and would be defensive, as they were in reaction to Adolf Hitler's attacks on the cities of Warsaw, Rotterdam, and the open city of Belgrade.

The "Luftkrieg und Gaskrieg: eine Warnung Churchills" Flyer is a German language propaganda flyer, dated circa 1942, produced by the Allies during escalating warfare on the Western Front during World War II. The flyer is a single sheet, with information printed on the front and back, warning the Germans about the potential for British retaliation in the cases of air and gas warfare. One of the main sources of information for the flyer is a radio broadcast from May 10, 1942 in which then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill discussed the possibility of bombing the German Homefront. The flyer emphasizes the defensive nature of the Allied war effort, noting Germany's former attacks on undefended cities and civilians. A portion of the flyer focuses on gas warfare, a strategy that Churchill claims the British would only use if the Axis powers used it first.
