<p>Cleveland, located in Connecticut's Western Reserve, was named in 1796 after Moses Cleaveland. Cleaveland led the Connecticut Land Company team that surveyed the area. The site on the mouth of the Cuyahoga River at Lake Erie was recognized for its potential as a center of water transportation, and thus for manufacturing. Cleaveland was incorporated as a village in 1814, and as a city in 1836. In 1831, the local newspaper
<emph render="italic">The Cleveland Advertiser</emph> dropped the first "A" in Cleaveland in order to fit the name on the masthead; eventually, Cleveland became the official spelling of the city's name.</p>
