Historical Note

In the 19th century, Irish poetry and literature began to be written predominantly in English, rather than Irish, as English became the main language of Ireland. A theme that appeared in Irish literature in the 19th century was Irish nationalism, and more specifically, the Irish Home Rule Movement, which was the the main political movement of Irish nationalism from 1870 to the end of World War I. The movement advocated for the self-government of Ireland. The works of many Irish writers, such as Sean O'Casey and Seamus Heaney, were influenced by Irish nationalism.
