The 19th century railroad system in Ohio provided citizens with quick and affordable transportation for goods and passengers across the state. After the American Civil War, Ohio began to experience significant growth in railroad mileage. Larger railroad companies purchased shorter lines across Ohio and connected them into an integrated railroad system throughout the midwestern and east coast states during the late 1800s. The Financial Records of Railroad Companies Operating in Ohio contains accounts payable forms, payroll checks and receipts, billing statements and claims notices, way-bills, and a financial agreement. Materials are dated from 1889-1898.

Columbus, Hocking Valley and Toledo Railway Company ran from Toledo to Athens and Pomeroy via Columbus, Ohio, transporting both coal and passengers. It formed as a merger between three other Ohio railroad companies in August 1881. The company became part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway system in 1910. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company (C&O) was a class I railroad formed in 1869 in Virginia from several smaller Virginia railroads. In 1888, the Cincinnati Division of the C&O was constructed, connecting Huntington, West Virginia to Cincinnati, Ohio. The C&O's primary transport was coal.

Ohio and North Western Railroad Company, chartered in 1886, bought the Cincinnati and Eastern Railway at foreclosure in January 1887. The Ohio and North Western Railroad Company was foreclosed in March 1890 and sold to the Cincinnati, Portsmouth and Virginia Railroad in June 1891. The Cincinnati, Portsmouth and Virginia Railroad Company merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway in October 1901. Norfolk and Western Railroad Company, formerly the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad, was purchased by E.W. Clark & Company at a foreclosure auction in 1881. The lines ran between Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. Its primary transports were agricultural products and coal.

Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (CCC&StL) had primary routes in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. CCC&StL, also known as the Big Four Railroad, was formed by a merger of several other railways operating in the midwestern states in June 1889. The railway transported both freight and passengers.

Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company, also known as the Panhandle Route, was formed from a merger of five railroad companies in September 1890. The company merged into the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1956.
