Biographical Note

Charles Conrad was drafted to serve the Army in WWI from Barberton, Ohio, in 1918. He spent the entirety of his service in the United States, primarily Camp Gordon in Georgia. Conrad became a sergeant and held an office job at the Supply Headquarters. His experience working at his family's store in Ohio helped him achieve this role during the war, and lessened his chances of getting sent overseas. The war ended right before Conrad's class was preparing to ship out to the European front.

Albert F. Robbins, born September 29, 1895, was drafted to serve as a private in the Army in 1918, when he was 22. He was also from Barberton, Ohio, a friend of Conrad's. Robbins was sent to Camp Sherman in Chillocothe, Ohio, in March 1918. From there, he was transferred to Camp Merritt in May, before being sent overseas to France in June. Robbins spent much of his time overseas in Italy, from August to March 1919. He returned to the United States in April 1919. Robbins never saw battle, but his letters complain often about the food and living conditions, and his constant state of fear.

Myrtle Davis corresponded with both friends throughout their service time, and was also from Barberton, Ohio.

Scope and Contents

The collection is primarily composed of letters from Charles Conrad and Albert Robbins between 1918 and 1919. Correspondence with Conrad is much more frequent, because Robbins was in Europe and his letters took longer to reach Myrtle. There are also a few photographs included.
