Scope and Contents

The Philip K. Dumaresq Diary Kept While Employed by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company in China and Japan, dated 1879, was recorded by Dumaresq while he was working as an American special agent for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company in China and Japan, accompanied by his family. Entries are mainly concerned with the weather, family, business conducted, and traveling. The diary includes three news clippings in English discussing a court case Dumaresq was involved in as a plaintiff, as well as an article in French that deals with a major typhoon that hit Shanghai in June. Chinese characters and their pronunciation and meanings are included sporadically throughout the diary to remind Dumaresq of addresses or names. Dumaresq mentions areas in southern Japan, where he was persuaded by his wife, Sophie Hulbert Dumaresq, to stay due to the cooler weather after they visited Nagasaki in August, 1879. The last third of the journal contains frequent references to Japan, with a list of sites visited in Nara included at the back of the book.
