            <abstract id="ref8" label="Abstract">Isidor Nathan Choynski was a Polish-American Jewish newspaper reporter and publisher who moved to California in 1854, and opened the Antiquarian Book Store. He was a literary satirist and advocate against anti-Semitism, and often wrote under the pen name of Maftir. The Isidor Nathan Choynski's Antiquarian Book Store Account and Ledger Book is a book serving both ledger and accounting purposes that was kept by Isidor Nathan Choynski in the running of his San Francisco shop, the "Antiquarian Book Store." Entries throughout the book indicate names of individuals, companies, or schools that bought from him, and several loose papers and bills of sale are included. The ledger is dated 1876-1880, and contains handwritten entries in English.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Isidor Nathan Choynski (1834-1899) was a Polish-American Jewish newspaper reporter and publisher who came to America in 1849 and attended Yale University. In 1854 he moved to California and began working as a newspaper reporter in the San Francisco area, and opened the Antiquarian Book Store. In 1859 he began writing for 
                <emph render="italic">The Weekly Gleaner</emph>, a Jewish newspaper run by Rabbi Julius Eckman. Choynski also wrote for the 
                <emph render="italic">American Israelite</emph>, and published the liberal newspaper 
                <emph render="italic">The Public Opinion</emph>. He was a literary satirist and advocate against anti-Semitism as well, and often wrote under the pen name of Maftir.</p>
