Esquire was started in 1933 as an American magazine aimed towards male readers, which featured articles, pin-ups, interviews, and advice on fashion and social etiquette. While it initially was focused on risqué pin-ups of women, it gradually developed into a more highbrow publication, aimed at readers who appreciated refined taste and affluence. The magazine has published work from famous authors such as William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Norman Mailer, Truman Capote, Ernest Hemingway, and Thomas Wolfe.
