Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-) is an American poet who was one of the founders of the Beat Movement in poetry in the 1950s. Ferlinghetti established the City Lights Pocket Book Shop in San Francisco in 1953, and it became a gathering place for other artists involved in the Beat Movement. Ferlinghetti’s poems frequently had political or American themes, such as his 1958 collection “A Coney Island of the Mind” or his poem titled “One Thousand Fearful Words for Fidel Castro,” published in 1961.
