<p>Gladys Eleanor Messenger Stiling (1900-1992) was an American writer born in Seneca, Kansas. Stiling lived in Argentina as a young person and attended Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University), graduating in 1929 with a degree in Spanish. She lived in Colombia for seven years in the 1930s and several more years in the 1940s and 1950s. Stiling wrote her manuscript, "Conqueror in Exile" while living in Bucaramanga, Colombia, in 1958. She later earned a Master of Education degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in Spanish, and taught Spanish throughout California. Stiling retired to San Diego in 1978 and moved to Ohio later in life. She died in Columbus, Ohio at age 92.</p>

<emph render="italic">Conqueror in Exile</emph>, dated 1950s, 1978, contains research and the typescript for a historical novel written by Eleanor Messenger Stiling. The word "conqueror" in the novel's title refers to Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, a Spanish lawyer who later became a conquistador. He explored much of northern South America, mostly territory in the modern nation of Colombia, including its capital city, Bogotá. He founded and served as the first mayor of Bogotá. During the 1950s, Stiling extensively researched the life and work of Jiménez de Quesada as the basis for her historical novel, which she wrote during the time she was living in Bucaramanga, Colombia, in 1958. While the vast majority of the collection is in English, a small amount of research materials are in Spanish.</p>
