            <abstract id="ref24" label="Abstract">James Henry Moser (1854-1913) was an artist and illustrator born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, who moved to Columbus, Ohio, at age ten. In Columbus as a young person, Moser was befriended and mentored by local artists. The James H. Moser Sketchbooks, dated from 1873 to 1912, contains twelve sketchbooks created by Moser throughout his career. Many of the sketches in the books depict people and scenes from everyday life during Moser's travels throughout the United States. Most of the sketches in the collection are rendered in pencil, but some are in pen and ink.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>James Henry Moser (1854-1913) was an artist and illustrator born in Whitby, Ontario, Canada, who moved to Columbus, Ohio, at age ten. In Columbus as a young person, Moser was befriended and mentored by local artists. As an adult, Moser, with Frederick S. Church, illustrated the first edition of 
                <title render="italic">Uncle Remus</title> by Joel Chandler Harris. Moser settled in Washington, D.C., where he served as a painting instructor and a freelance illustrator for the 
                <title render="italic">Washington Times</title>, 
                <title render="italic">Harper's</title>, and 
                <title render="italic">The Atlantic Monthly</title>. Moser later became the art critic for the 
                <title render="italic">Washington Times</title> and other local papers until his death at age 59.</p>
