            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>John Holbrook "Jack" Vance (1916-2013) was an American mystery, fantasy, and science fiction writer. He primarily published under the name Jack Vance, but also published some work under his full name, and several pseudonyms. Vance graduated from the University of California in Berkeley in 1942. He was awarded three Hugo awards, a Nebula and a World Fantasy award for lifetime achievement. In 1997, Vance was made a Grand Master of Science Fiction by the Science Fiction Writers of America.</p>

                <emph render="italic">The Dark Ocean</emph>, a novel published in 1985, and originally written circa 1960; 
                <emph render="italic">Strange People, Queer Notions</emph>, a novel originally written circa 1955, and published in 1957; 
                <emph render="italic">Wild Thyme and Violets</emph> an unpublished novel written in 1976; 
                <emph render="italic">The Stark</emph>, an unpublished novel written in 1954; 
                <emph render="italic">The Genesee Slough Murders</emph>, an unpublished novel written circa 1966; and two unpublished, undated short stories, "Fat Hannah" and "End of the Moon-Chase." The photocopies were created in 1978 and 1979.</p>

                        <emph render="italic">Strange People, Queer Notions</emph> is also a mystery novel, originally written circa 1955, and published in 1957 under his full name, John Holbrook Vance. The photocopy of 
                        <emph render="italic">Strange People, Queer Notions</emph> is missing the first page. Photocopies of the manuscripts were created in 1978.</p>

                    <p>Unpublished Novels and Short Stories includes photocopies of outlines, handwritten notes and typescript drafts for three unpublished novels and two unpublished short stories. It is not known when the two short stories, "Fat Hannah" and "End of the Moon-Chase" were written. Vance uses a pseudonym, "Jan Dublays," for "End of the Moon-Chase". 
                        <emph render="italic">Wild Thyme and Violets</emph> is a proposed novel, written in 1976. 
                        <emph render="italic">The Stark</emph> is a proposed science fiction novel, written in 1954. 
                        <emph render="italic">The Genesee Slough Murders</emph> is a proposed mystery novel, written circa 1966. The outlines and drafts of these novels were published in a collection of Vance's unpublished and unfinished works in 2005, 
                        <emph render="italic">Wild Thyme and Violets and Other Unpublished Works</emph>. The photocopies were created in 1979.</p>
