Harter (1922-2011) was an author, translator and professor who was internationally known for his scholarship and translations of French and Spanish literature. Harter completed many translations of both French and Spanish novels and poems including the work of Spanish poets Vicete Aleixandre and Juan Ramón Jiménez and Moroccan novelist Driss Chraïbi. The Hugh A. Harter Papers contain manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, notes, journals, magazines, and clippings. Manuscripts include drafts (some annotated) of Harter’s works, both his original writings as well as his translations. Correspondence largely relates to his work with Chraïbi’s novels. A large section of the collection is in French with some Spanish materials. Collection materials are dated circa 1950s-2005. Biographical Note

Hugh A. Harter (1922-2011) was an author, translator and professor who was internationally known for his scholarship and translations of French and Spanish literature. He was a decorated World War II veteran having earned the Medaille d’Honneur and almost a dozen other medals serving with the Military Intelligence 3rd Army at Normandy and Air Transport Command. Harter received a B.A. (1947) and PhD (1959) from Ohio State University as well as an M.A. from Mexico City College (1951) and Doctor of Letters from Alma College. He taught at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1996-1984, and was the director of an academy program (International Institute of Spain) in Segovia, Spain from 1969-1998. Throughout his life he lived, taught, and researched in Peru, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Harter completed many translations of both French and Spanish novels and poems including the work of Spanish poets Vicete Aleixandre and Juan Ramón Jiménez, and Moroccan novelist Driss Chraïbi. He wrote several books of his own including Tangier and All That, Return to Patton's France: 1944's Odyssey Retraced, and The Countess.

Scope and Contents

The Hugh A. Harter Papers contain manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, notes, journals, magazines, and clippings. Manuscripts include drafts (some annotated) of Harter’s works, both his original writings as well as his translations of several of Driss Chraïbi novels and poetry of Juan Ramón, Jiménez. Correspondence largely relates to his work with Chraïbi’s novels (back and forth with Chraïbi himself as well as different publishers). A large section of the collection is in French with some Spanish materials. Collection materials are dated circa 1950s-2005.
