Biographical Note

Paul S. Nathan (1913-2009) was a long-time writer of the “Rights” column for Publishers Weekly. Nathan wrote many plays throughout his life, from his high school days on, most notably his play “Ricochet” that was produced both in New York City and in Bad Homburg, Germany, and for which he won an Edgar Award. Outside of plays, Nathan was frequently published in other magazines, journals, and newspapers. He wrote short stories, poetry, and articles. Nathan also wrote several books, including four that were published. His Bert Swain mystery novels ( Protocol for Murder, No Good Deed, and Count Your Enemies) were all published in the 1990s.

Scope and Contents

The Paul S. Nathan Papers contains correspondence, manuscripts, programs, magazines, clippings, notes, and speeches. Many manuscripts are included for Nathan’s plays and books in both annotated and final versions. The collection also contains various writings of Nathan’s, including columns, articles, short stories, and poetry, spanning his long career. Correspondence mainly relates to his writings. There are photocopies from the 1990s of many of his earlier writings. The collection is dated 1927-circa 1990s.
