As of 2025, Thurber House is a museum and literary center in Columbus, Ohio. The house was previously home to author, humorist, and New Yorker cartoonist, James Thurber, and was built in 1873. Thurber’s parents rented the home from 1913-1917 while he was a student at The Ohio State University. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1980, the Metropolitan Learning Community matched an emergency grant from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office to repair the house, and renovate it to serve as a museum and literary center. The money wasn’t enough to cover the costs, but in 1982, an organization called Thurber Circle was established for enthusiasts of James Thurber, and the membership fees were used to fund remaining work on Thurber House. In 1984, renovations were finished and Thurber House opened as a non-profit literary center. The house contains Thurber memorabilia and a gift shop, and was also restored as a museum to reflect the time period the Thurber family lived there. In 1997, Thurber House established the Thurber Prize for American Humor. The prize was awarded three times before 2004, and as of 2025, has been awarded annually since then. Throughout its existence, Thurber House programs have included residencies for writers, author readings, and writing classes.
