Joshua Holmes Vogel (1889-1970) attended Ohio State University from 1908-1918, and graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture. His wife, Helen Hollister Vogel (1887-1947), also graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1912. They were married in Tokyo, Japan in 1915. From 1913-1917, Joshua worked in Tokyo as an architect and engineer. He also briefly worked a college residence building in Seoul, Korea. The couple returned to the United States briefly, where Joshua joined the firm Baker, Vogel, and Evans as a partner in 1920. The Vogels then returned to Asia to work on behalf of several missionary societies and schools, spending 1921 to 1925 in Shanghai, China, and 1925 to 1926 in Nagasaki, Japan. After returning from Asia, the Vogels settled in Seattle, Washington, where Joshua worked on public service buildings and urban planning.

Materials related to Helen include her bachelor's thesis and an article she wrote about Asian architecture. All other materials relate to Joshua's architectural projects carried out in locations in Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. These materials include photographs, correspondence, postcards, publications, sketches of pre-modern Japanese architectural details, and research related to Joshua's master's degree. Elevations, floorplans, and blueprints are also included, and except where noted as a carbon copy, are all original drawings. The photographs and postcards focus mostly on architectural details and buildings he designed, but also show the aftermath of the 1923 Tokyo earthquake. There are also over a dozen pictures of Nagasaki prior to its destruction from the atom bomb in 1945. The materials are arranged chronologically by the original creation date, then alphabetically by topic or given title within the same date.
